Salicylic acid

One of the most inexpensive acne medications is salicylic acid. It kills acne-causing bacteria, relieves inflammation, reduces excess keratinization and lightens acne blemishes. Effective in the treatment of mild forms of acne.

Salicylic acid is usually sold as an alcoholic solution in various concentrations. For acne treatment, it is best to choose a 1% alcohol solution. More concentrated salicylic acid solutions can cause severe flaking of the skin. There are also cosmetic alcohol-free lotions, peels, and salicylic acid cleansers.

Antibiotics

Medicines with antimicrobial activity kill microorganisms that cause acne. Usually used topically in the form of ointments, creams and lotions, but can also be prescribed in the form of tablets. The most popular antibiotics for acne treatment are the following: tetracycline (lotion and tablets), clindamycin (Dalacin T gel and Clindamycin, Dalacin capsules), metronidazole (Metrogyl gel and Metronidazole, Trichopolum tablets) and erythromycin (Zinerit lotion and Erythromycin tablets).

Lotion "Zinerit" is a combined preparation, since in addition to the antibiotic it contains zinc acetate, which reduces the production of sebum and reduces inflammation. Zinerit is effective in treating moderate to severe acne, but it can be addictive. Therefore, it is advisable to alternate the lotion with other acne treatments. In general, all antimicrobial drugs for acne are quite effective, but, as a rule, after a course of treatment, acne returns.

Benzoyl peroxide

Topical products containing benzoyl peroxide kill acne-causing bacteria. In addition, benzoyl peroxide improves tissue oxygenation, reduces sebum production and keratinization of the epithelium. Preparations containing benzoyl peroxide include Baziron AS gel (with an active ingredient concentration of 2.5%, 5% and 10%), Eklaran gel (5% and 10%), Desquam gel (5% and 10%), Proderm gel (5% and 10%) and Ugresol lotion (5% and 10%).

Benzoyl peroxide is suitable for the treatment of moderate to severe acne. The effect of the treatment lasts much longer than after using antibiotics. Addiction to benzoyl peroxide rarely develops, but it is possible after long-term use. Treatment should be started with funds with a weaker concentration, and then move on to more concentrated drugs.

Azelaic acid

Acne remedies containing azelaic acid prevent the growth of microbes, normalize disturbed processes of keratinization of the epithelium, reduce skin greasiness, smooth scars and reduce pigmentation after acne. Azelaic acid is effective for mild to moderate acne. Preparations with azelaic acid are produced under the following trademarks: Skinoren gel 15%, Skinoren ointment 20%, Azelik gel 15%, Azelex cream 20%, Finevin cream 20%, Finacea gel 15 %.

Retinoids

Medicinal preparations based on retinoids, synthetic analogues of vitamin A, are highly effective against mild and moderate forms of acne. These drugs have an anti-inflammatory effect and regulate the process of keratinization of the epithelium, preventing clogging of pores and the formation of comedones. The most popular retinoid products are Differin cream and gel 0.1%, Klenzit gel 0.1%, Zorak gel 0.1%, Adaklin cream 0.1%, Adolen gel 0, 1%, "Retinoic ointment" 0.05% and 0.1%, gel "Isotrexin" 0.05%.

For the treatment of severe forms of acne, it is best to choose combination drugs that, in addition to retinoids, contain other anti-acne substances. For example, Effezel gel contains adapalene retinoid and benzoyl peroxide, and Klenzit-C gel contains adapalene and clindamycin antibiotic.

In addition to external agents with retinoids, there are systemic preparations with synthetic vitamin A for oral administration. These remedies provide long-term relief from acne, but they are very expensive and also have dangerous side effects. The most famous drug in this group is Roaccutane.
