An even and beautiful dentition has not only aesthetic value - it is an indicator of the physiological norm of the structure of the oral cavity. It is necessary to figure out in which cases the gap between the teeth is subject to treatment, and in which it can remain a kind of zest of appearance.

Step 1

If the gap between the teeth has always been

Most often, the diastema (that is, the gap between the front incisors) is hereditary. Less commonly, it occurs due to bad habits (biting a pencil, etc.), late replacement of milk teeth with permanent ones, partial adentia (absence of one or a group of teeth). If the patient's bite is otherwise physiologically normal, diastema is not an indication for treatment with braces. With an even dentition, the diastema, in principle, does not have to be eliminated.

To get rid of diastemas and three (gaps between any teeth except for the front incisors), veneers are used - thin ceramic plates. Put on the surface of the teeth, veneers mask the gaps between them, and also cover the darkened enamel. The orthopedic method, however, has a significant drawback: to install veneers, it is necessary to grind several millimeters of tooth enamel.

The difference between the therapeutic method (or artistic restoration of teeth) is that the natural enamel is completely preserved. The specialist applies a special composite composition to those areas where teeth need to be grown.

Step 2

If the gap between the teeth appeared in adulthood

Suddenly appearing diastemas and tremas may indicate gum damage. The weakening of the gums to such an extent that the teeth are noticeably moving away from each other is a reason to consult a periodontist. First, you need to defeat the cause of the appearance of the cracks, and then deal with the investigation according to one of the scenarios described above.

Step 3

Diastema in children

In preschool children, the presence of a gap between the front incisors is a physiological norm. In this case, the diastema indicates that the child's jaw is growing normally, but the teeth remain the same. The gap between the incisors will close itself when the temporary teeth are replaced by the permanent ones. If the diastema does not disappear several years after the appearance of molars, this is a reason to consult an orthodontist. Until adolescence, with such a problem, removable plates are used, from 13-14 years old braces are placed.
